Sustainability

At Performance Food Group, we believe our business success depends on balancing environmental, economic and social objectives. PFG provides optimal service and value to our customers by striving for the highest operational efficiencies, minimizing the impact to the environment, and generating significant benefits to our stakeholders - associates, customers, suppliers, communities and shareholders. It is at the foundation of our culture, and we believe that this balanced business approach is crucial in today's global business environment.

Economic:

Every day, we travel thousands of miles to deliver food and food related products to help serve millions of meals through independent restaurants, schools, hospitals, cafeterias, casual dining, fast food chains, and others. By facilitating this flow of food to America's dining tables, we help companies large and small to thrive. Our business also benefits our associates, shareholders, and communities through wages, taxes, and charitable contributions. Our goal is to run a financially sound business, in a socially responsible and fiscally sustainable manner, in order to ensure that we continue to positively impact all of our stakeholders.

Environmental:

Performance Food Group complies with all environmental laws and regulations as they relate to our operations. We are committed to conducting business in a manner that will preserve our natural resources to the fullest extent reasonably possible. We operate each of our facilities with the necessary permits, approvals and controls. Each of our associates employs the proper procedures with respect to the handling of hazardous materials, including ensuring that we have training, reporting and monitoring systems in place.

In support of our environmental policy, we have implemented several programs including the testing of biodiesel fuels for our transportation fleet and the installation of on-board computer systems and governors to improve fleet routing, fuel efficiency, and reduce emissions. With regard to fleet management, we also recycle water used to clean our trucks and use all EPA approved detergents both internally and with our contracted maintenance vendors.

We have implemented a recycling program for paper, glass, and aluminum (in most of our administrative facilities), cardboard containers in our warehouses, and the use of pallets made from recyclable materials. We use energy management systems to monitor power usage and allow us to minimize our energy consumption. We have also installed HID efficient lighting in many of our warehouses.

We comply with hazardous waste regulations per EPA RCRA laws. And, for air quality measures, we're installing Variable Frequency Drive Motors on our compressors. Our refrigeration systems comply with EPA Tier Two reporting, and we have invested in computer control capabilities that support these safety and efficiency measures. To monitor our results in all these environmental and safety areas, we conduct field assessments on a monthly basis at the individual operating company level and generate internal reporting.

Safety:

The safety of our associates, our customers, and our communities is of the utmost importance to us. We are committed to fostering the most effective safety and risk management practices in all areas of our work. We train our people to follow safe practices to protect themselves and others. We also encourage the involvement of our associates in safety awareness activities and monitor and recognize safety accomplishments. By meeting our high safety standards, we feel that we are contributing to the well-being of our people, our company, and the communities we serve.

The safety and quality of our products are critical to maintaining the trust of customers and our company's reputation. It is our goal to provide safe products that meet high quality standards. It is all our policy to comply with food and product safety laws applicable to our company and its operations.

Agricultural:

Our working relationships with the supplier community include the development of Performance Food Group proprietary products under our own written specifications and guidelines to assure product quality and integrity. Our guidelines in the fruit and vegetable categories meet or exceed USDA standards. In the category of meat products, Performance Food Group currently partners with numerous suppliers who support and implement animal welfare policies. These policies are science-based strategies that serve to strengthen animal welfare practices across species and enhance the humane treatment of food animals. The policies are under constant review by experts in animal husbandry, veterinary medicine and agricultural production to reflect the most recent advances in technology, and are constantly updated to reflect industry best practices.

Social:

Today's business is about more than just commerce. It requires that we operate in unison with our associates, communities, and governments to foster greater economic development and sustainability. At its core is the connection of people and communities.

Throughout our company's history, we've found that we grow by investing not only in our business, but also in the communities we serve. Performance Food Group's philanthropy centers on four key areas: health and human services, education, economic development, and cultural.

In 2005, we launched a national affiliation with America's Second Harvest (AM2H) to assist in the fight against hunger with a commitment of a five-year, $500,000 pledge. In each of the communities where PFG is located, we have partnered with the AM2H food bank to provide funds, food, and volunteers. In its first year alone, PFG contributed more than 600,000 pounds of food to these local food banks. And, our support continues to grow.

PFG also provides charitable support to more than 250 organizations nationwide. For more information on our philanthropic efforts, click here (link to our webpage.)

The Future

Performance Food Group is committed to sound environmental, health and safety standards. We maintain active working relationships with industry associations and government agencies including the International Foodservice Distributors' Association, National Meat Packer's Association, Produce Marketing Association, USDA, and the FDA. We will continue to reinforce our commitment through the ongoing assessment of industry best practices and the advancement of our own internal initiatives in these areas.
