Performance Food Group

PFG-NorthCenter Story

In 1963 the Joseph Kirschner Company started a small division to sell Kirschner meat products to restaurants and drive-ins. In order to help these sales, mustard, ketchup and other products were added. This started a product line expansion that now stands at approximately 12,000 items.

In 1982, Allen Ryan purchased Kirschner Food Corporation from Kirschner’s, and changed the name of the company to NorthCenter Foodservice.

When the company first started, it operated out of a four-story building on
Water Street in Augusta. In 1975, land was purchased on Dalton Road and a 12,000 square foot building, eighteen feet high was built. Currently, NorthCenter’s facility measures 3 million cubic feet, with 1.9 million cubic feet of dry storage, 858,000 cubic feet for freezer storage, and 260,400 cubic feet in cooler and storage space.

In 1997, NorthCenter Foodservice, purchased the assets of Associated Grocers of New England’s Foodservice Division, signaling the company was ready to become a major player in the booming southern New England market.

In 1999, NorthCenter Foodservice was recognized as the “Great Distributor Organization” by ID Magazine. This award goes to the outstanding foodservice distributor in the United States.

In March of 1999, NorthCenter Foodservice merged with Performance Food Group of Richmond, Virginia, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary. Performance Food Group is one of the largest foodservice distribution companies in the United States with an outstanding growth record. It has distribution centers primarily in the east, and south.

Performance Food Group is a public company traded on the NASDAQ (PFGC)
